Pre-Orthodontic-Treatment
Before entering into orthodontic treatment, it’s especially important for adults to treat periodontal, or gum, disease. Gum disease is much more prevalent in adults and if not treated before braces treatment it can hurt your teeth and negatively affect the long-term health of your teeth.
Your dentist will be able to help you with making sure that you are free of gum disease of if there is problems, they can help you treat it before beginning orthodontic treatment. During treatment, it’s important to maintain gum health so adult patients need to receive regular cleanings while on adult orthodontic treatment.

Post-Orthodontic-Treatment
After orthodontic treatment, the experience for adults is very similar to children. Retainers need to be worn after the removal of the orthodontic appliance to make sure that the teeth do not move back to their position before treatment. Different options exist for post treatment retainers which our Johns Creek Orthodontist, Dr. Nima can go over with you once treatment is complete.
It’s important to wear a retainer for a year after ending orthodontic treatment to help new stabilizing bones to form and hold your teeth in place. Once these stabilizing bones come in your teeth are much less likely to move. However, its still good to wear your retainer even after because as we age our jaws do move. Though very slowly, it can jostle teeth over time.
Most adults who actually go to adult orthodontic treatment do so because they allowed their teeth to move out of place by not wearing their retainer.
